Production

On Oct 7, 2014, AMC renewed The Walking Dead for a sixth flavor.[one] Scott Gimple said that the sixth flavor would continue to remix fabric from the comic and explained that there would be a flashback backstory to some of the characters:

"At that place are other people that we're going to see throughout the flavor from the comics, and I'k excited for people to see it, only I don't want to tell them now. I think a few pocket-sized remixes, merely some direct stuff from the comic too, as far as these characters get.

I call up there's a really cool attribute to the first one-half of the season that serves almost every bit a prequel to some direct comic stuff in the 2nd one-half of the season. I call back there's a way that Robert did some of the story that nosotros're reaching that had a real past to information technology, where people are referring to some things in the past in the comic. And we're able to portray some of that backstory in some ways that you didn't go to run across in the comic."[2]

Reception

Critical Response

The sixth flavour of The Walking Dead has received positive reviews from critics. On Metacritic, the flavour holds a score of 79 out of 100, indicating "by and large favorable reviews", based on ten critics.[9] On Rotten Tomatoes, the flavor holds a 76% with an boilerplate rating of seven.40 out of ten based on 25 reviews. The site's critical consensus reads: "Six seasons in, The Walking Dead is still finding means to top itself, despite deadening patches that do petty to accelerate the plot." Matt Fowler for IGN gave a half dozen.8/ten rating for the season equally a whole. In summary, he said: " Flavour 6 of The Walking Dead had some big, effective moments while also crumbling nether an avalanche of fake outs & trickery." He praised the Morgan flashback episode ("Hither's Not Here") and Carol's arc and the "string of slap-up, fierce episodes in the [2nd half of the season]." His major criticisms of the season were "Glenn's 'death' - and other cheap fake outs/unnecessary cliffhangers" and "characters clumsily steered into making dumb choices."[ten]

Glenn's fake expiry in the third episode, "Thank You", was a major source of controversy. The Hollywood Reporter heavily criticized the determination of the writers to create the story line. Daniel Fienberg felt apathetic well-nigh the decision and said, "I'm not sure I care about [...] the way his death would bear on the ensemble. If he's dead, the loss volition be felt most by Maggie, simply Maggie just had her sis die a few episodes agone, so there'due south no variation anymore to making Lauren Cohan wail, no thing how entirely assuredly she does it. To me, The Walking Dead has lost any core of human being relationships it e'er had, and whether Glenn lives or dies, it simply feels mechanical at present." Tim Goodman expressed shock over the concept of Glenn potentially being alive saying, "I honestly don't think showrunner Scott M. Gimple is dumb enough to imitation this death somehow, non with how implausible it would exist for Glenn to survive information technology."[11] The Hollywood Reporter later declared that the evidence had "lost its credibility" when Glenn was revealed to be live in the seventh episode, "Heads Up". Scott Gimple responded to the controversy surrounding this. He said, "We've had instances of people in a very emotional country — Tyreese jumping into the centre of a large herd and fighting his fashion out; a human cut off his own manus and fights his style through a department shop full of walkers. These things are part of the globe. Glenn had the bad luck of existence knocked off that dumpster by Nicholas, ending his ain life merely [Glenn] had the good luck of Nicholas landing on him. At that place's a lot of very specific facts virtually information technology that I think a lot of people accept sort of gotten wrong. Just breaking information technology down shot for shot … I think nosotros're past that indicate. I don't think this is any sort of new example that broke the rules of our evidence at all. I think it's very much in line with everything nosotros've done before. I don't call back there's a brownie effect."[12] Erik Kain for Forbes felt that the conclusion ruined Glenn's storyline. He declared season 6 "a mixed bag" and was frustrated with the decision to concord off Glenn'southward fate for three episodes. He said, "...the showrunners spent three more episodes essentially refusing to move the plot forward. We got one adept backstory, and so two episodes where almost nothing happened to anyone nosotros cared about. We learned that Maggie was pregnant and that's about all." When speaking of the confirmation of Glenn being alive, Kain felt the determination was "implausible" from the inconsistency of his autumn and camera angle tricks. He also felt the determination to "[elevate] it out for weeks" had "effectively [killed] off all the tension [...] at the cease of episode 3."[13] Brian Moylan of The Guardian was also critical, saying: "Glenn is alive, and The Walking Expressionless will never be the same.... It would rather kill off a primary character than pull a lame switcheroo. Until at present."[14]

While the first half of the season received heavy criticism, many of the episodes in the 2d half were critically acclaimed. The episode "No Style Out," which resolved all previous cliffhangers, was widely acclaimed.[15] "The Next Globe" received highly positive reviews for its lighter tone[16] and the romance betwixt protagonist Rick Grimes and Michonne past fans and critics akin, notably The Guardian [17] and The A.V. Club.[18] Subsequent episodes received praise, notably the episode "Non Tomorrow Yet". "The Aforementioned Boat" was lauded for its "strong female focus."[xix] Jeremy Egner of The New York Times commented positively on Carol's character development. He adulated the complexity of Carol's division between ruse and real emotion, saying "Like e'er, Carol did whatever necessary to survive and protect her cohorts, and did so in particularly roughshod manner [...] but she seems increasingly unable to avoid reckoning with the cost. "Are you O.K.?" Daryl asked when he arrived. "No," she responded, and that was before Rick executed the remaining Savior right in forepart of her. It'due south going to take more than a few Hail Marys to make that image, among many others, go away."[xx]

The finale, "Terminal Day on Earth", received largely mixed to negative reviews, with many criticizing the cliffhanger. It sparked backlash on social media from fans and critics akin. While Jeffrey Dean Morgan'south functioning as Negan was praised, the episode was mostly criticized for its cliffhanger ending. On Rotten Tomatoes, information technology holds a 42% with an boilerplate rating of half dozen.60 out of 10, based on 33 reviews. The episode'south critical consensus reads, "Despite Jeffrey Dean Morgan's deliciously evil plow as Negan, the meandering "Last Twenty-four hour period on World"—and its manipulative bewilderment ending—make for a disappointing season finale."[21] Zack Handlen of The A.V. Lodge gave the episode a C, the lowest grade given by the site for the prove to date, and commented, "The problem is nearly everything else. We'll get to Negan and that so-idiotic-it's-actually-kind-of-hilarious cliffhanger in a second, simply before we do, permit'due south unpack the many ways 'Concluding 24-hour interval On Earth' went wrong. Even the title is bad—not on its own."[22] Emily VanDerWerff of Vox gave the episode a negative review, calling it the worst episode of the show and then far, and commenting, "The extra-long episode spent its first hour dramatizing all the excitement of your GPS insisting that you take a road you already know is closed, and the terminal half-hour sank some nicely spooky moments with a also-long monologue and a completely botched cliffhanger." Still, she gave a positive review on Negan's introduction.[23]
